This is a special book – a family collaboration through time.
Ned Sevil died from cancer in 2010 aged 30. All the artworks in the book were made between 2000 and 2010 and have been collaboratively put together by Ned’s brother Tom Sevil (aka Civil), his mum Chris Mason and his sister-in-law Lou Smith – who collectively make up the ‘Tent Pegs’. It has been made with love to celebrate the beautiful, playful spirit that was Ned, and to share the incredible collection of artworks he has left behind.
Ned was an artist who completed honours at Sydney College of the Arts. He exhibited as part of the Makeshift Collective at ACCA and Mori Gallery and as Evil brothers with his brother Tom in Melbourne, Sydney, and Alice Springs and with his dad, with Tom too, as Sevil and Sons at New England Regional Gallery in Armidale NSW.
Ned’s drawings, whether in his sketchbooks or for exhibition, were intimately connected with his street art and graffiti work. Ned painted and drew around Australia on street corners, shed doors, abandoned houses, train lines, lonely highways and more.

Not My Book
This could be the begining of something… who knows.
Inside the cover of one of Ned’s old sketch books he has written “Nope this is not my book.”
Many things about this are just so Ned, and make me smile.
And now, it feels with publishing this first book of Ned’s, 15 years after he died, this name Not My Book has such a beautiful clash of meanings and just fits on another level. The name rises to meet the challenge of us taking like 12 years to make this book with so many stops and starts and stops and starts. And the fear deep down that we’ve not captured the spirit of Neds treasured characters, drawings and motives. And yeah, it’s just not Ned’s book. And I think he’d love that.
Me and Ned savoured graffiti and mischievious art stories and legends. Stories told to each other with such glee. I’ve always loved the stories of characters and styles that move beyond just one generation – beyond just one person.
Let’s see where this goes…
